Understanding Percentage Increase and Decrease
Percentage increase or decrease tells you how much a value has changed relative to its original amount. It is one of the most common calculations in business, finance, and everyday life:
- Salary negotiations: Did you get a 5% raise? Use the "Apply a Percentage Change" section to see your new salary.
- Discount shopping: A \$80 item marked down 25% becomes \$60. Enter -25% to see the result.
- Investment growth: If your portfolio grew from \$10,000 to \$12,500, that is a +25% increase.
- Budget tracking: Compare this month's spending to last month's to see the percent difference.
Formula: Percentage Change = ((New Value − Original Value) / |Original Value|) × 100. A positive result means an increase; a negative result means a decrease.
